TOOL — EIN ELIGIBILITY CHECKER · THE EXAMINATION, ON ITS OWN PAGE · ANSWER FROM YOUR OWN FACTS; THE CHECKER ROUTES, IT FILES NOTHING AND SPEAKS FOR NO AGENCY
Can you get an EIN — and by which route?
One anxious question sits under almost every visit to this desk: can I even get one? This checker answers it the way the Examination on the home page does — from four facts about your case: whether the entity is already formed, whether the responsible party holds an SSN or an ITIN, whether an earlier application was refused or went silent, and how the entity is owned. The ruling below is the route that fits those facts, in the Examination's own words.
This checker routes by the facts you give it. It does not file anything, it is not the IRS, and no result here is an IRS ruling on your case — the routes, windows and form instructions it applies are the IRS's published ones, cited on this site to IRS — Employer Identification Number and the Instructions for Form SS-4. Where the facts say you may not need this desk at all, the checker says so — that honesty is the point of the instrument.
The Examination — five rulings on your case
Five questions. No email required to see your result. Each answer is typed onto the sheet as the examiner rules — answer honestly, the route changes with the answers.
Application for Employer Identification Number

The five routes this checker can rule
Every result above is one of these five rulings — the same five the Examination has always issued, each worked in full elsewhere on this desk:
Source for the routes and windows: IRS — Employer Identification Number (checked November 4, 2026). Fax: EIN generally within 4 business days, if a return fax number is provided. Mail: approximately 4 weeks. International applicants: 267-941-1099. The IRS also warns that high inventory can delay processing — no result on this page is a promise of a faster IRS.
Weighing the paid routes against doing it yourself?
The free IRS route, a paid third-party EIN service, and this Membership, compared on the same criteria — cost, who does the work, the timeline, and what happens after the number is issued: Getting an EIN without an SSN: your three routes. The free route comes first there too, with the IRS instructions cited and dated.
If your route is the Membership's route
Paths C, D and E end at the same desk. The EIN itself is free from the IRS, and everything the checker just ruled is the whole method if you would rather file it yourself. The Membership — $249/year, or $24/month with a 12-month minimum term — is for owners who want the route worked for them: at joining, the EIN application is handled on the facts you provide, with the submission confirmed, the expected window tracked, the status chased, and the CP 575 confirmation delivered into your vault. In every term after that, the annual federal cycle runs as coordination only, on the permitted list stated in full on the Fee Schedule: deadline calendaring, reminders and status tracking; verbatim collection of the figures and documents exactly as you provide them; completeness checks stated as facts about the file; transmittal of filings you have signed, as your designee, with your authorisation on file; and the document vault. This desk signs nothing as preparer, and questions that need a determination about your own filing duties go to your own CPA or tax attorney — that boundary is stated on the Fee Schedule and holds here too.
If your ruling was Path B, the honest next step is the free IRS online route first — the Membership stays open if you still want the filing and the timeline managed for you. If your ruling was Path A, form the entity first; the Membership is open the week your entity exists, and this desk will not sell you a formation.
